Following the success of Pickwick Papers and Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby was hailed as a comic triumph and firmly established Dickens as a 'literary gentleman'. It has a full supporting cast of delectable characters that range from the iniquitous Wackford Squeers and his family, to the delightful Mrs Nickleby, taking in the eccentric Crummles and his travelling players, the Mantalinis, the Kenwigs and many more. Combining these with typically Dickensian elements of burlesque and farce, the novel is eminently suited to dramatic adaptation. So great was the impact as it left Dickens' pen that many pirated versions appeared in print before the original was even finished. Dickens had already achieved renown with The Pickwick Papers. With Oliver Twist his reputation was enhanced and strengthened. The novel contains many classic Dickensian themes - grinding poverty, desperation, fear, temptation and the eventual triumph of good in the face of great adversity. Oliver Twist features some of the author's most enduring characters, such as Oliver himself who dares to ask for more), the tyrannical Bumble, the diabolical Fagin, the menacing Bill Sikes, Nancy and 'the Artful Dodger'. For any reader wishing to delve into the works of the great Victorian literary colossus, Oliver Twist is, without doubt, an essential title.

Oliver, jeune orphelin de neuf ans, part pour Londres, où il trouve refuge chez un brigand qui veut faire de lui son complice. Puis, Oliver rencontre un honnête homme, M. Brownlow, qui devient son protecteur. Grâce à lui, il découvre pourquoi le sort s'acharne contre lui : il est l'héritier d'un homme très riche, mais il a également un demi-frère jaloux qui veut s'approprier son argent.

Exploité plutôt qu'élevé dans un orphelinat, Oliver endure les privations et les brimades. Au comble du désespoir, il choisit de s'enfuir dans les bas-fonds de Londres et trouve refuge parmi une bande de jeunes pickpockets agissant pour le compte du vieux Fagin. A cette école du crime et du vice, Oliver apprend toutes les ruses pour fausser compagnie à la misère. Présumé coupable d'un vol, qu'il n'a pas commis, il est recueilli comme son propre fils par le vieux Mr Brownlow.
Mais la bande de Fagin le retrouve et le force à participer à un cambriolage... Tableau saisissant de la condition des enfants abandonnés dans l'Angleterre victorienne, Olivier Twist (1839) est un des romans les plus populaires de Dickens, hanté par ses propres terreurs d'enfant.
