Το Κόμμα σού έλεγε να αρνιέσαι τη μαρτυρία των ματιών και των αυτιών σου. Ήταν η υπέρτατη, η ουσιωδέστερη εντολή του. Απομονωμένος στο νησί Ιούρα στα ανοιχτά της Σκωτίας, υποφέροντας από τη φυματίωση που θα αποβεί σύντομα μοιραία για τη ζωή του, ο Τζορτζ Όργουελ έγραψε το 1984 με πυρετώδη ρυθμό, σ’ έναν αγώνα δρόμου με τον χρόνο, μεταξύ 1947 και 1948. Στις 4 Δεκεμβρίου του 1948 έστειλε το ολοκληρωμένο χειρόγραφο στον εκδοτικό οίκο Secker and Wartburg και το βιβλίο κυκλοφόρησε στις 8 Ιουνίου του 1949, επτά μόλις μήνες πριν από τον θάνατό του. Κορυφαίο δείγμα πολιτικής δυστοπικής μυθοπλασίας, το 1984 δάνεισε στην αγγλική γλώσσα όρους που καθιερώθηκαν σύντομα στην καθομιλουμένη, ενέπνευσε ταινίες, τηλεοπτικές εκπομπές, θεατρικά έργα, ένα μπαλέτο, μία όπερα, ένα άλμπουμ του Ντέιβιντ Μπόουι, απομιμήσεις, παρωδίες, συνδέθηκε με τους πλέον ετερόκλιτους πολιτικούς χώρους, από το κίνημα των Μαύρων Πανθήρων ως την αντικομμουνιστική Birch Society, ερμηνεύτηκε με ποικίλους τρόπους, απαγορεύτηκε, αμφισβητήθηκε.

Το βιβλίο μεταφέρθηκε πολλές φορές στο σινεμά και στην τηλεόραση, ενώ έχει γίνει και όπερα.
