Trekking in Greece: The Peloponnese and Pindos Way

In the 1970s I was teaching in Athens and came across the account by Lord Hunt, of Everest fame, of his 1963 traverse of the Pindos mountains with a mixed party of Greek and English youngsters. I decided that I would try to retrace his itinerary and my route became the backbone of the first edition of this guide in 1986. Since then I have added descriptions of most of the interesting mainland massifs so that the book became a general guide to mountain trekking in Greece. At the time of the last revision I acquired a colleague, Michael Cullen, who was born and grew up in Greece and founded its first ever trekking company. This time we decided to change the format of the guide quite radically, ditching almost everything in favour of a single route that runs pretty much the length of the country from the northern frontier with Albania to the southernmost reaches of the Peloponnese. We have accordingly also changed the title to The Peloponnese and Pindos Way, in the hope that this will give the book a clearer focus and identity and help to attract walkers to come and sample the real charms and beauties of Greece's mountains. If you are in any doubt, there is no better taster than the blog of Jane and Alan Laurie (http://greekhiking.com) describing their epic 2014 walk from the Prespa Lakes on the Albanian-Greek border to their home in the southern Peloponnese, most of it following a route identical with or very close to ours. And keep an eye on our websites, www.thepindosway.com and www.thepeloponneseway.com, for additional photographs and various extra snippets and bits of information which we will add as time goes by.

Why Vegan?

'So the only question is: do animals other than man suffer?'One of the great moral philosophers of the modern age, Peter Singer asks unflinching questions about how we should live our lives. The ideas collected in these writings, arguing that human tyranny over animals is a wrong comparable to racism and sexism, triggered the animal rights movement and gave impetus to the rise in vegan eating. One of twenty new books in the bestselling Penguin Great Ideas series. This new selection showcases a diverse list of thinkers who have helped shape our world today, from anarchists to stoics, feminists to prophets, satirists to Zen Buddhists.

Χάρτες UND

und. Athens is a new art-guide that seeks to map, record and promote the alternative art scene of Athens today. Focusing on contemporary art by young and emerging artists based in the city, this independent double publication offers a comprehensive directory of artist-run spaces, artist studios, galleries, museums and institutions in Athens, presented alongside local insights about each neighbourhood, where to eat and which streets are worth exploring. The first city guide of its kind in Greece, und. Athens comes as a printed, foldable map available for sale at select bookstores, shops and other locations. This map is the perfect companion for art-curious urban explorers to discover a city thatʼs changing rapidly and in ways that cannot be immediately grasped: shifting demographics, unique architectural and urban-planning conditions, a shaky political landscape—and the tired adage of an indefinite crisis screeching in the background—are shaping the city every day in a myriad ways, and particularly the way local artists think and work. From the visual arts and street art to performance and creative writing, und. Athens turns the spotlight on alternative art spaces and projects, in an attempt to reassemble a city that is broken as much as it is in flux.
