We talk about sex more and more, but are we more liberated? In the third volume of his acclaimed examination of sexuality in modern Western society, Foucault investigates the Golden Age of Rome to reveal a decisive break from the classical Greek version of sexual pleasure. Exploring the moral reflections of philosophers and physicians of the era, he identifies a growing anxiety over sexual activity and its consequences. At the core of this transformation Foucault found the principles of the 'care of the self': the belief that the self is an object of knowledge to be cultivated over time, and the implications this has for ethics and behaviour.

Foucault's writings on power and control in social institutions have made him one of the modern era's most influential thinkers. Here he argues that punishment has gone from being mere spectacle to becoming an instrument of systematic domination over individuals in society - not just of our bodies, but our souls. Τοποθετώντας το σχέδιο της πίπας και τη διατύπωση που του χρησιμεύει ως λεζάντα στην καλά οριοθετημένη επιφάνεια ενός πίνακα (στο μέτρο που πρόκειται για έναν ζωγραφικό πίνακα τα γράμματα δεν είναι παρά μόνο η εικόνα των γραμμάτων, στο μέτρο που πρόκειται για έναν μαυροπίνακα το σχέδιο δεν είναι παρά μόνο η διδακτική προέκταση ενός λόγου). Και τότε, πάνω στους λοξότμητους, και τόσο φανερά ασταθείς, ορθοστάτες του, δεν απομένει στο καβαλέτο τίποτε άλλο παρά να ανατραπεί, στο πλαίσιο να διαλυθεί, στον πίνακα και την πίπα να κυλήσουν καταγής, στα γράμματα να σκορπιστούν: ο κοινός τόπος -ένα τετριμμένο ή καθημερινό μάθημα- έχει χαθεί. Το βιβλίο "Για τη λαϊκή δικαιοσύνη" αποτελεί μια συζήτηση του Μισέλ Φουκώ με τους Αντρέ Γκλικσμάν και Μπένι Λέβι γύρω από την έννοια του δικαίου, της δικαιοσύνης και των δικαστηρίων. Τι είδους δικαιοσύνη θα αποδίδει μια μελλοντική κοινωνία και μέσα από ποιους θεσμούς; Τα δικαστήρια αποτελούν θεσμούς απονομής δικαιοσύνης ή θα πρέπει να συγκροτηθούν άλλοι θεσμοί διαφορετικοί από τους σημερινούς; Με ποιους τρόπους θα μπορούσε η κοινωνία να συμμετέχει σε αυτούς τους μετασχηματισμούς;

"Αυτό που θα ήθελα εγώ να επιχειρήσω να συλλάβω είναι η εξουσία. Όχι όπως την αντιλαμβανόμαστε συνήθως, αποκρυσταλλωμένη σε θεσμούς ή σε μηχανισμούς, αλλά, αν θέλετε, η εξουσία όπως υπάρχει διαμέσου ενός ολόκληρου κοινωνικού σώματος, ως το σύνολο αυτού που θα αποκαλούσαμε "ταξική πάλη".
